Gender and mining program works to address women and children`s issues in the mining sector by encouraging them to make inroads into male-dominated mining sector despite challenges. The program is working towards women access to business finance on equal bases with men, campaign against investment that do not comply with a Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC), leadership training, skills development, communities that address discrimination, intimidation and violence against women in mining communities as well as safe and hygienic work places for them.
In the context of children living in close proximity to mining operations, concerns include: Secure livelihoods and the ability to benefit from inheritance, access to education and health services, and protection from sexual and economic exploitation, protection from exposure to harmful waste materials and safe living environment.
