Women Play Major, Yet Underreported Role in African Mining Sector

Many studies into the mining sector have described how masculine the industry is. However, reports from the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) and the African Centre for Gender of the UN Economic Commission for Africa highlight the significant, yet chronically underreported major role African women play in the sector, more so in artisanal and small scale mining (ASM). Despite the ASM workforce in Africa comprising 40-50% women, a growing body of evidence reveals that women are differently and more negatively impacted by their engagement in ASM in their communities.
